Ash Wednesday—February 22
In just a few days we will all be waiting for that famed ground hog, ole Punxsutawney Phil, to share his yearly prognostication. People will wait with baited breath to hear whether or not we will have six more weeks of winter or not. This annual event is covered by all the major new organizations and it's “big news”....for one day! Then every one goes back to their normal activities and waits for either more winter or an early spring.
Personally, I am very thankful for the mild winter we have had so far and am ready for an early spring! So, hopefully “Phil” will give us the sign!
As we begin to yearn for spring our thoughts turn to crocuses, daffodils and most excitedly, “new life!” Believe it or not, Easter is coming into sight! The Lenten season begins this month! This is the 40 days before Easter, not counting the Sundays, as they represent the resurrection. The church has traditionally set aside these 40 days for personal contemplation, repentance and prayer. Ash Wednesday, February 22nd this year, is the first day of the Lenten season and many churches have a service of humility and repentance on this day. It is called Ash Wednesday because of the tradition of placing ash on people’s foreheads symbolizing an attitude of brokenness and repentance.
As you remember, maybe not fondly, I like to challenge you to “give something up” for Lent as a way to help you remember what our Lord has done for you! I have done this for years and this tradition of “giving something up” for Lent puts Easter into proper perspective, much the same way the 4th Gift puts Christmas into perspective! Some people give up coffee, coke, ice cream, desserts, a favorite television show….something you really like to eat or do. (Note: It is not fair to give up spinach...or broccoli...or work!) The idea being that when you crave this favorite thing you will be reminded, in an infinitesimal way, what Jesus gave up for you! And then, after 40 days (actually 47) of being reminded of what Jesus gave up, Easter Sunday is more exciting than ever and the joy of celebrating the resurrection takes on a whole new meaning! Wow! So, let’s all commit to “give something up” for Lent beginning February 22nd and prepare our heart and life to celebrate the resurrection….the really “big news”...for all who believe...for eternity!
Can’t wait to see you Sunday! Come expecting someone to be added to the Box Score! And remember, I love you! Pastor Curt
